What's Pina Colada?
Pina Colada is a tropical drink invented by a Bartender at Caribe Hilton in 1954 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1978 it got declared as the official drink of Puerto Rico.
The literal meaning of Pina Colada is strained Pineapple.
The original recipe uses rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. Even the ratio of these ingredients was fixed. However, with time different versions and ratios started getting used in the recipe. A lot of people now use coconut milk instead of coconut cream. You too can adjust it as per your taste preference.
The popularity of this drink can be guessed from the fact that the 10th of July is celebrated as the National Pina Colada Day in the US.
Virgin Pina Colada
The alcohol-free version of Pina Colada is called Virgin Pina Colada. So, even if you don't consume alcohol or avoiding it for some time, you can still enjoy the virgin version of this drink. Since there is no alcohol in it, kids can have it too.
It's a perfect drink for your summer parties.
What goes in virgin pina colada?
To make virgin pina colada, the following ingredients are needed:
Ingredient notes
- Pineapple: For best results, use fresh juicy sweet pineapple. However, it can also be made with canned or frozen pineapples.
- Pineapple juice: Use pineapple juice without added sugar.
- Coconut milk: I have used full fat, canned cocont milk. Fresh coconut milk can also be used. You can also use cream of coconut in this recipe but in that case, skip sugar as cream of coconut is already sweetened.
- Sugar: Optional. You may skip sugar or use a healthier sweetner of your choice.
How to make?
Virgin pina colada is one of the easiest drink recipes to make. You just need to throw everything in a blender and blend.
Pour into glasses. Garnish with pineapple chunks. If required, add more ice cubes and enjoy!
Recipe tips and tricks
- Instead of adding ice, you can use frozen pineapple in the recipe.
- Adding sugar is optional, you may skip it completely or replace with a healthier sweetner of choice.
- After blending, freeze pina colada in popsicle molds to enjoy pina colada popsicles.
Frequently asked questions
No. Pina colada tastes the best when it's creamy and frothy. If you make it in advance, you will lose the froth and creaminess. Also, the ice will melt, making the pina colada watery.
So, keep all the ingredients ready and blend just before serving.
Use frozen pineapple instead of ice, if you want to avoid that.
