What is a cobbler?
Cobbler is a dessert that generally has a fruit base that's topped with a cake batter or biscuit dough and then baked.
Ingredients needed to make plum cobbler
To make this fresh plum cobbler recipe, you will need the ingredients shown below:
- Plums: Use whichever variety of fresh plums is available to you. Sweet or tart both are fine. You can mix different varieties too.
- Lemon juice: It's added to make the fruit filling slightly tart. You can skip it or reduce the amount if your plums are already tart.
- Brown sugar: I have used granulated light brown sugar. You can also use regular white granulated sugar.
- Corn starch: Corn starch is used to thicken the plum filling.

Serving plum cobbler
Serve plum cobbler hot, warm, or at room temperature with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream. The combination of warm plum cobbler and vanilla ice cream is really divine.
You can also drizzle some honey, maple syrup, or caramel sauce on top.
To make it fancier sprinkle some roughly chopped caramelized nuts on top.
Storing the leftovers and reheating
This plum cobbler will be fine for a day without refrigeration.
To store for a longer period, cover the baking dish with a cling wrap or aluminum foil, else, transfer to an airtight container and then refrigerate. It will be fine for 4-5 days.
To reheat, microwave. You can also reheat it in the oven. For that, cover the baking dish with an aluminum foil and put it in the oven. Heat covered at 180℃ (or 350℉) for around 20 minutes or until heated well.
Recipe tips, tricks, and variation suggestions:
- I prefer using juicy, ripe, plums to make plum cobbler and use lemon juice to add tartness. Even overripe plums that have not gone bad can be used in this recipe. But you can use tart plums too or mix different types of plums.
- Adjust the amount of sugar and lemon juice that you are adding to the filling depending on how sweet or tart your plums are.
- Don't cut the plums into very small pieces otherwise, you will get a paste-like filling. The cobbler will taste better if you get small chunks of plum in every bite.
- I have used very juicy plums in this recipe so there was a lot of liquid. If your plums are not juicy enough, use less corn starch.
- You may also add regular white sugar instead of brown sugar.
- After pouring the batter over the plums, don't mix them.
- If you prefer a less baked and lighter topping then cover the baking dish with an aluminum sheet and then bake.
- Instead of making this cobbler in a large baking dish, you can make mini plum cobblers by baking it in individual ramekins.
- You can follow this recipe to make different types of fruit cobblers using your favorite fruit. Even berries can be used.
- Instead of using cake batter as a cobbler topping, you can use biscuit dough too.
