Ingredients needed
To make this easy matcha cake in a mug, you will need the following ingredients:
Ingredient notes and substitute suggestions
- Matcha: Matcha is also sometimes also called green tea powder but don't mix it up with green tea. Matcha comes in a smooth powdered form and has a stronger flavor than green tea. Matcha comes from younger tea leaves and its processing process is much gentler than the processing of green tea. Use a good quality organic matcha powder otherwise, you won't get the flavor of matcha.
- Canola oil: Any neutral flavored oil can be used too. Some people also use vegetable oil but I don't like the taste of vegetable oil in desserts. Non-vegans may also use unsalted butter.
- Vanilla extract: Add only a few drops of vanilla extract or skip if you want. The strong flavor of vanilla can easily overpower the gentle flavor of matcha if not added carefully.
- Milk: Plant-based or dairy both are fine.
Make sure that all your ingredients are at room temperature.

- Honey or any liquid sweetener like maple syrup or agave syrup
- Whipped cream (vegans may use whipped coconut cream)
- A dollop of ice cream
- Matcha glaze
- Sugar glaze
- Chopped berries or fresh fruits
- Chopped nuts or dried fruits
- Sprinkles

Storing and reheating tips
Matcha mug cakes are best eaten fresh but if you have leftovers and you want to store them, you can also refrigerate them for 2-3 minutes.
It's best to allow them to reach room temperature without reheating. Reheating them in a microwave may make them chewy.
Recipe tips, tricks, and variation suggestions
- Make sure that the ingredients you are using are at room temperature.
- Different microwaves may give different results so, the cooking time may vary. Keep an eye on your cake after 50 seconds in the microwave and microwave further only if required.
- While mixing the wet and dry ingredients make sure no dry ingredients are left unmixed at the bottom of the mug.
- You can also add other ingredients like white chocolate chips or raisins to the batter
- Choose the size of the mug appropriately. If you use a very large mug, the cake will stay at the bottom and the cake will not look very appealing. And, if you use a very small mug, the ingredients will overflow on microwaving.
- Make sure that the mug you are using is microwave safe.
- Adding vanilla extract is optional. Even if you add it, add it in a very small quantity otherwise it will overpower the subtle flavor of matcha.
- Adjust the amount of sugar to suit your taste.
