Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I also consider it the most important meal not only for health reasons but also because if I don't eat a good breakfast I find it difficult to focus on anything and my whole day gets spoiled. I have hardly ever skipped breakfast in my life.

A lot of people want to change their habit of skipping breakfast but find it difficult to eat or make anything in the morning.

Today's easy make-ahead breakfast recipe- mango overnight oats/ tropical overnight oats is perfect for such people. You can make it a night before so there is no excuse for skipping breakfast the next morning.

Also, it's so delicious that you won't be able to resist it.

What are overnight oats?

Overnight oats is a type of oatmeal in which instead of cooking the oats with milk they are soaked in milk for a few hours preferably overnight.

The oats soak all the milk and become soft and edible.

You can flavor overnight oats with different fruits, berries, chocolates, or nuts to create different delicious versions.

What goes in mango overnight oats?

To make this easy mango overnight oats recipe, you will need only six basic ingredients that are shown below:

Ingredients required to make overnight oats

Ingredient notes and substitute suggestions

  • Old-fashioned rolled oats: To make overnight oats use old-fashioned rolled oats. Never use instant oats to make this recipe as they will almost dissolve in the milk if left for a few hours and you won't get the right texture.
  • Coconut milk/ any milk of your choice: I would recommend using coconut milk as it goes really well with mangoes. The refreshing combination of mango and coconut milk gives it the taste of tropical overnight oats.
  • Mango: Use a sweet variety of mango which is not very fibrous. If mangoes are not in season, canned or frozen mangoes can be used too.
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds make the oats thick and creamy.
  • Desiccated coconut: You can slightly toast them for more flavor. Freshly grated coconut can also be used.
  • Honey: Feel free to use any sweetener of your choice.

How to make?

Making mango coconut overnight oats is very easy. It just involves three steps i.e. mixing, refrigerating, and garnishing.

  1. Mixing: Put the rolled oats, chia seeds, milk, honey, mango, desiccated coconut, and sweetener in a jar. Mix everything well. Use a large jar or bowl so that there is enough space for mixing. Put the lid on or cover with a cling wrap.
  2. Refrigerate: Put the jar in the fridge overnight. Though after 4 hours also it will be edible it's better if you leave it overnight.
  3. Garnishing: Take out the jar after 7-8 hours. Mix everything again and if it's too thick add more milk to get the desired consistency. Add more chopped mangoes and desiccated coconut on top and enjoy!

Frequently asked questions

Are overnight oats healthy?

Yes, overnight oats are considered healthy. In addition to the health benefits of oats like rich fiber and protein content, another benefit of overnight oats is that when they are soaked in milk for a few hours, the starch and acid of the oats get naturally broken which makes them easily digestible and good for your gut.

How long do you need to soak the oats?

Though the oats will become edible after 4 hours of soaking, it's best to soak them overnight i.e. at least 7-8 hours.

Can overnight oats be made in bulk?

Yes, you can make the base of overnight oats in bulk. Just keep the quantity under what you can finish off within 5 days. Also, if you are making something to consume after more than a day mix only the oats, milk, chia seeds, and sweetener. It's best to add the fruits maximum a day in advance.

With time, the oats may become thicker in the fridge, just add more milk to get the desired consistency before serving.

Recipe tips and tricks

  1. Coconut milk tastes the best in mango overnight oats as it gives the oats a tropical flavor but you can use whichever milk you prefer.
  2. As coconut milk is thicker than any other milk, I have used ¾ cup of milk with ½ cup of oats. If you are using another milk, add slightly less. Adjust the amount of milk depending on your consistency preference.
  3. More tropical fruits like pineapple, kiwi, etc can also be added to this overnight oatmeal recipe.
  4. Instead of chopped mangoes, mango puree can be used too.
  5. Use a sweet, non-fibrous variety of mangoes to make this dish.
  6. You can make this recipe with any fruit of your choice.
  7. Add chopped nuts/nut butter to make your breakfast more nutritious.
  8. This recipe will give you thick overnight oats.  If you prefer it thinner, add more milk to get the desired consistency.

I am not a huge fan of overnight oats, that's probably because I have been making boring ones. Now yours makes me think over and try again.
