What's needed to make cabbage ramen stir fry?
To make this cabbage and noodle dish, you will need the ingredients shown below:
Ingredient notes and substitute suggestions
- Instant ramen: For this quick and easy recipe I have used instant ramen but you can use any noodle of choice. Just the time and method of cooking the noodles will vary depending on what you are using.
- Cabbage: Use green cabbage in this recipe. You can use napa cabbage too but green cabbage is a better choice. Avoid using red cabbage in this recipe.
- Greens: I have used spring onion greens. You can also use bok choy. Both can be used too.
- Roasted white sesame seeds: They add a nice nutty flavor and texture to the dish and also improve the nutritional value of the dish.
- Red chili sauce: Feel free to use any hot sauce of your choice.
- Sesame oil: It adds a very tasty nutty flavor to Asian dishes.
- Vegetable oil: Canola oil or peanut oil can be used too.
How to make (step-by-step instructions)?
Step 1: Heat vegetable oil and sesame oil in a large wok or pan. Add chopped ginger, garlic, the white part of spring onion, and sliced red onion. Saute on a high flame until the onion turns translucent.
Step 2: Add chili flakes and saute for a few seconds.
Step 3: Add chopped cabbage and ground black pepper.
Step 4: Saute on a high flame for 3-4 minutes or until the cabbage is no longer raw but still crunchy.
Step 5: Push the cabbage towards the edges of the skillet to create some space in between.
Step 6: Add soy sauce, chili sauce, and vinegar in the center. Saute for a few seconds and then mix everything.
Step 7: Cook instant ramen in a separate pot and strain.
Step 8: Add cooked ramen to the skillet.

Your quick and easy cabbage ramen is ready to be enjoyed!
Serving tips
Cabbage ramen is very flavorful and filling so you don't need a side dish with it.
However, if you want you can serve it with an Asian side dish like garlic broccoli, Chinese eggplant, tofu in chili garlic sauce, gobhi manchurian, or stir-fried snow peas.
You can also serve a light Asian soup like sweet corn soup, mushroom tom yum soup, or veg manchow soup with it.
Storing and reheating tips
The leftover cabbage noodles can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for 3-4 days.
To reheat, either microwave for a few minutes stirring once in between or, reheat on the stovetop. If reheating on the stove, transfer the noodles to a pan, add a splash of water, cover the pot, and reheat. Keep checking and stirring in between until heated well.
Recipe tips and tricks
- You can use any type of noodles to make this recipe.
- Don't slice the cabbage very thinly for using in cabbage ramen. Roughly chop in slightly big pieces which you can see, chew, and taste with the ramen.
- For me, the saltiness of soy sauce is enough in this dish, if it's not savory enough for you, add some salt or increase the amount of soy sauce.
- You may add more vegetables like bell pepper, snow peas, carrots, and mushrooms to this stir-fried ramen.
- If you want a spicier cabbage ramen, drizzle some chili oil on top.
- You may also add some toasted sesame oil in the end for extra flavor.
- Always use a large wok or skillet for stir-frying so that the ingredients get stirred easily.
- Stir fry on a high flame to get the smoky flavor that you taste in the stir-fried noodle dishes made in restaurants.
